PIC Flex Boards from $35

From: http://www.fored.co.uk/html/pic_flex_boards.html

The PIC Flex development system has been designed for developer and hobbyist intending to leverage the features available in the 28 and 40 PIN Device families available from Microchip. Use of SMD has allowed us to offer more features and a bigger prototyping area than ever previously provided on any of our boards.PIC Flex includes an optional on board programmer which operates over the serial port and will program all devices in the PIC series of 16F and 18F core so you need no external programmer. It will operate with our standard PC programmer application supplied with the board. The system is compact and is efficiently laid out in a 9 cm x 8 cm PCB; includes onboard PSU, Communications interfaces, and additional footprints for devices extending the system’s flexibility.Tracked power and ground connections enable quick, simple integration and usage. A standard RS232 communications interface is available with DB9 footprint. Standard ICSP interface enables the 16fxxx/18fxxx device to be reprogrammed in circuit with or without the on board programmer. The board is available fully assembled.Features :

  •
    • Optional on board programmer
    • Supports PIC’s in 28 or 40 pin packages.
    • Serial interfaces for standard 3/5 wire serial communications link selectable as DCE or DTE.
    • Full USB circuitry suitable for applications using USB PIC’s with 28 or 40 pin boards e.g. 18F2550, also included link to switch to allow switchable boot into Microchip USB bootloader. (Note this circuitry and PIC is only supplied on the USB versions)
    • LCD Module power connector and contrast trimmer.
    • Optional full on board programmer - connect to the PC and program hex files directly to the on board PIC.
    • All I/O pins available on 0.1” pitch PCB matrix suitable for standard IDC connectors
    • Prototyping area of 280 holes (10×28) on a 0.1” pitch. Large enough for an additional 40 pin DIP device and support circuitry. Including tracked Vcc and Gnd lines.
    • 4 Switches and pull up resistors (with link to allow Switch 4 to drive the PIC reset pin).
    • 4 LED’s with resistors.
    • 2 NPN and 1 PNP general purpose transistors with base resistors for driving relays or higher loads.
    • Links provided to disconnect support circuitry and to allow for low power battery operation.
Has on board 5V, 1A, regulator and full decoupling.
    • Power LED
    • In Circuit Serial Programmer (ICSP) standard 6 pin connector
    • 20MHz crystal oscillator

PIC Key V2 - cheaper and more capable

Forest Electronic Developments’ in-circuit programmer for PICs operates on the PC USB port, requires no additional power supply and the programmer application runs under Windows XP and Vista. Operates on a simple 6 pin SIL connector and includes the FED In Circuit Debugger.Available with USB lead and plug, or with a USB socket so you can use your own lead.

PIC Key 2 is up to 10 times faster than the original PIC Key (but is fully compatible with it), uses an active debugging interface (which is much more reliable for In Circuit Debugging) and is 40% cheaper than the original PIC Key.
